Ok. Looks like winter has come early this year. Time to start drinking darker beer. If you like Long Trail Limbo, which is one of our top selling IPAs and a great year-round beer, you’ll love Unearthed in the colder months. Unearthed is a dark and rich stout, with big notes of coffee and chocolate. At 7.9% ABV it’ll keep you toasty warm during a snow storm. Unearthed delivers on all the big and bold flavors you expect from a great stout just as Limbo delivers on all the big and bold flavors you expect from a great IPA.
This is not a beer that we always have in stock, but I thought it’d be a great beer to mention. I’ve been on an IPL kick lately and was super pumped when this one came back in stock. Super Fresh is billed as the assertive big brother of Peak’s dry hopped pilsner, Fresh Cut, which we do carry year-round. Featuring Chinook, Citra, Centennial, and Simcoe hops, it truly is a “Wicked Dry-Hopped Pilsner”. Super Fresh bursts with waves of delicious citrus and tropical hop flavor, while finishing clean and crisp. According to our Peak sales rep, the brewers from Peak, Lawson’s, and Fiddlehead were blind tasting beers from their breweries and they all landed on Super Fresh. Sometimes I’m amazed how long some of these great beers take to sell through. We took 20 cases of Peak Organic Super Fresh 2 weeks ago and there are still a few cases hanging around at each store.
Finally! Newburgh canned an IPA! And, they nailed it. After trying Hop Drop, their super juicy DIPA, I wondered why they hadn’t yet canned an IPA. From flavor to name and packaging, MegaBoss IPA delivers. Packed with 8 different hop varieties – Whole Leaf Delta, Simcoe, Amarillo, Sorachi Ace, Lemon Drop, Apollo, Cascade, Centennial – MegaBoss IPA is simultaneously spicy and tropical. The light, crisp body allows the citrus and tropical notes of these high alpha hops to pop. At 7% ABV, you can enjoy a few and still stay sharp. If you need further validation, MegaBoss IPA won Gold at this year’s TAP NY Festival.
*The beers highlighted in these posts hold their own against all those “White Whales” we see coming into the market. We’re doing something different to promote all the awesome beers that we regularly stock and that don’t get the hype they deserve.
This is the first in a series of short blog posts about “Hidden Gems” we stock at Minogue’s. The format will be short and to the point. The beers highlighted in these posts hold their own against all those “White Whales” we see coming into the market. If you’re in the craft beer scene, you know what I’m talking about. I won’t name brewers or brands. Your buddy has probably told you about one, or you’ve been told there’s a one can/bottle limit, or worse yet, you arrived a few minutes too late to find it’s already sold out. I’d like to do something different to promote all the awesome beers that we regularly stock and that don’t get the hype they deserve.
The guys from Jack’s Abby stopped by yesterday to talk shop. They have a few new projects in the works, including Kiwi Rising in cans and a couple new beers hitting our market in November. I also learned that they’re using a variety of sexy hops from the Pacific Northwest and New Zealand – Calypso, Citra, Equinox, and Simcoe to name a few – which are not advertised on their IPL packaging. I’ve been a fan of Hoponius Union, Mass Rising, and Kiwi Rising since we started carrying them, and I’ll always grab one when I find it on tap. They have a nice niche producing craft lagers, specifically uniquely hopped India Pale Lagers.
Excess IPL is definitely a uniquely hoppy beer, even within the Jack’s Abby portfolio. Each one of the hops used – Citra, Chinook, Calypso, Equinox, and Simcoe – adds a layer of complexity, and dry hopping the beer 3 times amplifies those layers of flavor and nuance. The clean finish from the lager yeast again sets the taste apart from so many of its hoppy peers, though it is characteristic of all Jack’s Abby lagers. Personally, my favorite aspect of Excess IPL is its balance, given the intense hop flavor. The balance and complexity of hop flavor allow you to gleam a little something different with each sip, rather than experience an intense battery of one individual note.
